How to Beat Imaru — Dragonwilds Boss Guide

Defeat Imaru in RuneScape: Dragonwilds with a power-level 5 loadout, Wither and Soul-rift strategy, Purification Pools, and phase-by-phase tips.

Last updated: 2026-08-27

Imaru is Fellhollow's soul-eating dragon boss and a major step up from Velgar. The fight combines ordinary dragon attacks with the region's Withering and Soul-rift mechanics, so raw armour is not enough: you must recognise when to become Withered, damage the spectral form, and cleanse at a Purification Pool.

This guide describes combat mechanics and therefore contains encounter spoilers.

Imaru prerequisites

Complete Dragon Slayer, enter Fellhollow through the Wise Old Man, and advance Withering Heights until Imaru's lair is available. Learn the regional Wither loop before entering the boss arena:

  1. Wither exposure fills the status meter.
  2. Full exposure moves the player into Soul-rifted state.
  3. Spectral enemies and objects become interactable in that state.
  4. A Purification Pool cleanses the effect before its timer becomes fatal.

Practise this sequence in safer regional content. Imaru expects you to use it under pressure.

The community-maintained strategy reference treats Imaru as a power-level 5 encounter. Use a complete Fellhollow set rather than mixed opening gear.

StylePractical equipment goal
MeleeSteel, Fallen Hoplite, or White Knight armour with a power-level 5 weapon
RangedGreen Dragonhide or Ranger armour with a Willow bow or Steel crossbow
MagicSplitbark or Necromancer equipment with a matching staff
ShieldDragonblight, Dragoncurse, Anti-Dragon, or another strong regional shield
JewelleryDefensive or undead-focused bonuses that suit the active build

Bring strong food, a style-appropriate Infusion, healing supplies, utility runes, and a full ammunition or rune reserve. Fire and Air runes support useful weapon and defensive magic where unlocked. A Ring of Life can provide insurance, but it should not replace preparation.

Phase 1: physical Imaru

Imaru alternates between grounded and airborne pressure. Grounded attacks include stomps, rot spikes, and sweeping fire breath; aerial attacks include tracking rot projectiles and repositioning slams.

Stay close enough to reach safe damage windows without committing under every animation. When rot bolts track you in the air, delay the dodge until their path commits. Dodging too early allows the projectile to correct and still connect.

Melee players should attack the exposed body or chest during safe grounded windows. Ranged and Magic players can pressure aerial phases, but should limit attacks so a cast or aim does not consume the dodge timing.

Spectral phase: Soul-rift Imaru

When Imaru becomes spectral and immune to ordinary damage, the fight changes rules. Enter Soul-rifted state through the arena's Wither mechanic so you can damage the spectral form.

Rotsworn enemies may appear during this window. Control them rather than tunnelling the boss, especially when their attacks threaten the route to a Purification Pool. Once Imaru drops out of the spectral state, cleanse before the Soul-rift timer expires and then return to the physical damage window.

The essential loop is:

  1. trigger Soul-rifting when Imaru is spectral;
  2. damage Imaru and manage summoned enemies;
  3. watch the remaining Wither time;
  4. reach a Purification Pool;
  5. resume normal damage after cleansing.

Missing step four is one of the most common ways a seemingly successful attempt ends.

Later-phase pressure

Below the early health thresholds, Imaru layers more rot zones, fire sweeps, slams, and explosive hazards into the existing pattern. Keep the central routes to cleansing points open and avoid placing yourself behind lingering dangerous ground.

Do not enter the final spectral windows with empty stamina or an uncontrolled add pack. Clear immediate threats, Soul-rift, damage the spectral boss, and cleanse in that order. A few lost attacks are cheaper than losing the attempt to the timer.

Best style for Imaru

Melee

Melee can exploit grounded openings and exposed weak areas but must respect every disengage. A strong shield and short attack strings make the learning run safer.

Ranged

Ranged maintains useful pressure during flight and while moving between pools. Carry surplus ammunition and avoid aiming so long that tracking bolts catch you stationary.

Magic

Magic combines ranged damage with useful mobility and defensive spells. Rune planning matters because the encounter is long and utility casts compete with direct damage.

Solo and co-op tips

Solo players should keep one repeatable route between the boss, Wither source, and Purification Pool. Heal before deliberately entering Soul-rifted state so the spectral timer is the only urgent resource.

In co-op, call spectral transitions and pool routes. Players may reach dangerous Wither states at different times; do not assume the entire party can cleanse on one person's schedule. Spread during projectiles, then converge only for clear damage or support windows.

Imaru rewards

The first story victory supplies the quest proof needed to finish the Fellhollow arc. Repeat kills can support Vestige chasing, including the rare Serrated Claw used to unlock Imaru's Talon. Drop rates and reward tuning are patch-sensitive, so verify the live Journal or current community database before planning a long farm.

After Imaru, use the Dowdun Reach guide and Black Knight's Fortress walkthrough for the next progression tier.
